Mystery Snacks: layout finished and proofs ordered!
11 days ago – Wed, Jul 22, 2026 at 05:23:49 AM

Hi all!

I'm here with your monthly update for Mystery Snacks, letting you know that the layout for the book finished up this past month! It took a little bit of adjusting to get blocks of text and the layout to mesh, but with some expert help from layout artist BoRyan, it is done! Here’s a couple samples to check out:

Writer reviews + editing

After layout was complete, I sent a copy to all the project’s guest writers to make sure that any changes we made to wording to get it to fit on the page still had the same meaning they intended when they wrote their work. For me, this step was really important because I’d heard of folks having their writing heavily edited, to the point where they felt it wasn’t their work before, and, while I think my edits were light, I wanted to have full consent from everyone. If someone’s name is on it, I want to make sure they feel the work is still coming from them.

In parallel to this, the final laid out pages went through some line editing and a quick review from a family member who helped give some additional feedback and then… all adjustments made… I sent it for proof copies!

Proof copies ordered!

I’ve ordered proofs from Mixam (where I’ll order in bulk), Lulu (used for POD through RPG Trader), and DriveThruRPG (POD through… DTRPG itself). The hardest part of this was that that all had very slightly different templates for their interiors and covers, so it was a lot of small adjustments to get the pages to fit and still satisfy bleed requirements. I’ll keep you updated on the differences as proofs come in too since I’m very curious out the quality differences between the three printers myself.

Everything so far is on track, and I’ll keep you updated at our next check in!

Mystery Snacks May update: drafts, layout, and 1-pager!
about 1 month ago – Tue, Jun 23, 2026 at 06:55:07 AM

 Hello all!

I'm here with your monthly Mystery Snacks update to let you know how the project is going and give hints about the final work where I can.

This month, all final drafts from writers were submitted on time, and I’ve reviewed them and made what I feel are the final edits. I’ve also sent this along with final edits on the base material to our layout artist, BoRyan, who said he’d be able to finish getting it into final format in July (aligned with schedule).

Aside from this, I also got the bonus 1-pager for collab project backers completed! It’s about a group of goblins who are trying to fix the human’s party to make it more tasteful (to goblin tastes) without getting caught. Here’s a sneak peek of the top 1/3 of the page!

Goblin art for this one-pager is from an artpack by Guillaume Jentey that I’ve been saving just for a special project, and I’m really glad I got to use it here! I’m giving the game to a proofreader and playtesting with kiddo this summer, then it should be ready to release alongside the surveys, which will be sent out in Aug/Sep (I plan to wait until proofs are confirmed OK first).

Everything so far is on track, and I’ll keep you updated at our next check in!

Hello all!

I'm here with your monthly Mystery Snacks update to let you know how the project is going and give hints about the final work where I can.

This month, all writers got their first drafts in on time, I’ve had a chance to check them over and give feedback, and final draft phase is kicked off with two writers already submitting their final drafts! • Dude, Where’s My Broom?, a magical college campus and coffee shop conundrum

Working titles and some keyword hints (may change since we’re still in draft phases) from stretch goal guest writers:

Mystery Snacks April update: stretch mystery hints and timeline status
3 months ago – Tue, Apr 21, 2026 at 06:51:07 AM

 Hello all!

The Mystery Snacks campaign is rolling along with guest writers on track for their first drafts!  I am LOVING some of the ideas they've come up with, but I don't want to confirm titles just yet in case things change during draft revisions.

So far, I can say though, there have been ideas floating around that have touched on chaotic geese, a ghost writer, a community stew, automotons, and a circus!   Like I said, these may change, but, in general, I think the current topics chosen really show a wide range of settings and mysteries, which is what I wanted to see.  I'm hoping to share some tentative titles with you next time too!

For completed and next steps, here's a summary of what I'm tracking, and there's a more detailed discussion and update in the TTRPGkids Dev Log #20 on website.   Basically, we're on track with the current focus being on drafts:

COMPLETED:

  • Feb – fund project
  • Mar – kick off guest writers (send guidelines, formatting + style guide)
  • Mar – set up pre-order store
  • Apr – guest writer check in

NEXT STEPS:

  • May – guest writer 1st drafts due
  • May – review 1st drafts
  • June – kick off guest writer 2nd drafts
  • June – guest writer 2nd draft due
  • June – kick off layout artist
  • July – final layout due
  • July – order proof (round 1)
  • Aug – proofs arrive, check, review update (round 1)
  • Aug – order proof (round 2)
  • Sep – proofs arrive, check, review update (round 2)
  • Sep – order bulk
  • Oct – bulk order arrives
  • Oct – ship to fulfill project

I'll be sending another update in late May, check out the pre-order store if you missed the campaign, and I hope to have more to share with you soon!

Thank you,
Steph, TTRPGkids.com
